TecDAX vs DAX Futures: What You Can Actually Trade

DAX845 Learn Series · Updated July 2026 · 5 min read

What the TecDAX Is

The TecDAX tracks the 30 largest German technology companies below the DAX selection, ranked by free-float market capitalization, with each constituent capped at 15% of the index. It is calculated by Deutsche Börse as a performance index, the same methodology family as the DAX 40. Names rotate, but the index is dominated by software, semiconductor and biotech stocks listed on Xetra.

TecDAX Derivatives on Eurex: They Exist — Barely

Eurex does list a TecDAX future under the product code FTDX. On paper it looks tradeable. In practice, the order book tells a different story.

The DAX futures complex turns over tens of thousands of contracts every session with a deep, tight book. FTDX volume is a small fraction of that — the book is often only a few contracts deep, spreads are wide, and resting size is scarce. For a day trader, that combination means slippage on entry, slippage on exit, and no reliable fill on a stop.

Searching for TecDAX options? Activity in TecDAX derivatives beyond the future is minimal. The liquid German index options market is DAX options (ODAX) — if you need optionality on German equities, that is where the volume lives.

What Traders Actually Trade for German Exposure

If you want to actively trade German index risk, the practical instrument set is the DAX futures complex:

The tech-heavy names that drive the TecDAX — SAP-adjacent software, Infineon-style semis — overlap heavily with what moves the DAX itself, so most of the "German tech" story is already priced through the DAX complex. For pure buy-and-hold TecDAX exposure, an ETF does the job without an order book to fight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there TecDAX futures?

Yes. Eurex lists TecDAX futures under the product code FTDX with a multiplier of €10 per index point and a minimum tick of 0.5 points (€5). Liquidity, however, is a small fraction of the DAX futures complex.

Can I trade TecDAX options?

Activity in TecDAX derivatives beyond the future is minimal. The liquid German index options market is in DAX options (ODAX). Most traders wanting German tech exposure use the DAX complex or ETFs instead.

What should I trade instead of TecDAX futures?

Active day traders use the DAX futures complex: FDAX (€25/point), FDXM (€5/point) or the micro FDXS (€1/point). They offer deep liquidity, tight spreads and near-round-the-clock Eurex hours.
