Volume Profile Trading on DAX: A Practical Guide

DAX845 Learn Series · Updated March 2026 · 5 min read

What Is Volume Profile?

Volume Profile is a charting tool that shows the distribution of traded volume at each price level over a specified time period. Unlike traditional volume bars (which show volume per time), Volume Profile shows volume per price. This reveals where institutional participants are positioned and where price is most likely to react.

Key Volume Profile Components

Point of Control (POC)

The price level with the highest traded volume. POC represents fair value for the session. In range-bound markets, price gravitates toward POC. When price moves away from POC with conviction, it signals a potential trend.

Value Area (VA)

The range of prices containing 70% of the session’s traded volume. Value Area High (VAH) acts as resistance; Value Area Low (VAL) acts as support. Trading inside the value area is range trading; trading outside suggests directional opportunity.

High Volume Nodes (HVN)

Price levels with significantly above-average volume. HVNs act as magnets — price tends to slow down and consolidate at these levels. They represent areas of acceptance where buyers and sellers agree on value.

Low Volume Nodes (LVN)

Price levels with below-average volume. LVNs represent areas of rejection — price moves quickly through these zones. When price revisits an LVN, it often accelerates through rather than pausing.

Volume Profile Trading Strategies on DAX

Strategy 1: POC Reversion

When DAX opens outside the prior day’s value area, look for a move back toward the prior POC. This mean-reversion trade works best on days without major catalysts. Entry: on reversal candle pattern near VA edge. Target: prior POC. Stop: beyond the session extreme.

Strategy 2: Value Area Breakout

When DAX breaks above VAH or below VAL with volume, it signals a directional move toward the next HVN or support/resistance level. Confirmation: volume expanding as price exits the value area. Entry: on retest of the broken VA boundary.

Strategy 3: Naked POC Test

A naked POC is a prior session’s POC that price has not revisited. These levels are magnets. When DAX approaches a naked POC from 1–5 sessions ago, expect a reaction. Trade the bounce or break with tight risk.
